Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Romance, mystery, murder, scandal…this book had it all.
Seattle 1933: a hardworking, single mother is forced to kiss her son goodnight, secure him inside their humble apartment, and leave for work. Daniel, three years old, is the light of Vera Ray’s life and it breaks her heart to leave him behind. Alone. But she has no choice. Enter a fluke mid-May snow storm and Vera’s life is forever changed as she returns home to find Daniel gone.
Modern day Seattle: Claire Aldridge finds herself stumbling through life in a grief driven fog. A car accident changed her life in unimaginably tragic ways. She feels lost and struggles to find the motivation needed to repair her marriage that teeters on the verge of disrepair. Until a fluke mid-May snowstorm inspires a new’s article that will help her find answers and clarity she didn’t know she needed.
Two strangers, two mothers, two lives forever altered by tragic loss. Ultimately, the power of love, on various levels, proves to be the catalyst for forgiveness, strength, and the courage to move on.
Amazing read. LOVED.
Project Life: Weeks 41, 42, 43, and 44
Posted: December 4, 2012 Filed under: Project Life 3 CommentsI am determined to finish this bad boy. Staged another massive come back this week…FOUR weeks completed.
WEEK 41

I wish I had thought of it earlier, included a note to Jake this week. I will definitely be doing this more often…

Had fun with Halloween washi and reliving Tyson’s FIRST soccer goal. Total game changer for him and so fun to watch:

WEEK 42
Two additional inserts this week:

Love the new landscape 8 x 10 page. Included two soccer team photos: one regular-ish and one silly. My kid is the one with his hands on his head. Of course. On the back is the silly photo with a little label listing the kids’ names:

Snapped this photo of Jake during our day date to the pumpkin patch. Happy boy…

WEEK 43
Included a lot of fun, memorable non-photo items this week…

A surprise visit by Papa G was definitely a highlight for all three of my boys. Tyson has been leaving me little “notes” (pictures). He stuffs them in my purse, in the car…I love finding his little treasures. I included one in this week’s layout:

Happened to be my birthday…loved one of the cards I got in the mail so I included it. Ty made me a “Birthday Book” and I included that as well:

I have been doubling up the Instagram photos to really tell a complete story. I have been dying to check out Anthropologie and snuck over after work. Splurged on a little dress, so different from anything I have, just need somewhere to wear it…

WEEK 44
Halloween week. Super busy but so much fun with the boys this year…

Got one of our first subscription boxes this week…LOVED it. Also discovered KIDS YOGA. So cute watching the boys:

Love this story…love capturing the super big meaningful moments:

Thanks for visiting…

Crafty Kid Subscription Box RAVE: Kiwi Crate
Posted: December 4, 2012 Filed under: Arts and Crafts, Subscription Boxes Leave a commentI have had my eye on this particular subscription box for quite some time. I came across a $10 off coupon code and decided to pull the trigger. SO SO glad I did, we all LOVED this one. For this particular box Kiwi Crate paired with Carnegie Hall to present a music box:

We started with the xylophone activity. First step: decorate the box…

Love how Ty volunteered to help Jake write his name on his box. Sweet boy.

And THIS picture speaks volumes and expresses our love of this box more than I can articulate through prose:

Jake loved the sticker pattern part of the festivities:

Super fun and clever way to teach kids about composing music and patterns:

Playing his first ever composed piece of music, heh:

These make me swoon. I love everything about them:
We moved onto the bell bracelets. The kit provided pencils with which to decorate the wooden beads:
They were a little too tricky for Jake to manipulate, so we used crayons instead. Just as much fun, less frustration from the three year old:

After making the beads “beautiful” we stringed. Jake liked to shake after each bead to make sure it sounded just right…

And then we had our own little family dance party featuring DJ Tyson…so.much.fun!!

I absolutely LOVE this box and am giddy about what is in store for us next month…

Subscription Box: Crafty Fail

Multiple rainy days = perfect time to bust out the crafty subscription box. Today, we gave the Babba Co. box a shot…

By far, the biggest hit of the entire box was the pair of “noculars” and moon chart:

The boys excitedly waited while I prepped the moon activity:

Ty helped make the glue mixture. His face was priceless. Messy isn’t his thing. This was about as far as he got:
Jake, however, loved:

With Ty out of the picture, I stepped in and helped. One by one, we pieced on the paper squares:

A lot of hardwork later, we had this lovely:

While it dried, we read the book that was provided in the box. Super cute story:

Now, this is where things turn sour. You are supposed to pop the balloon, pull it off the edges, and end up with a round, paper mache moon. Here is our version?!@#$ Not so much. Crafty fail. At least we got the fun little light up candle?

While I love the idea behind the Babba Co boxes: activity, supplemental app freebies, book to supplement activity…it is a little spendy for me. We enjoyed this box but will not be renewing…I have fallen in love with a couple of others.
December Daily: Moments 1 and 2
Posted: December 2, 2012 Filed under: December Daily, Scrapbooking 2 CommentsThe cover came together…

Back side. Even though it says, “December Daily”, I have decided to focus on 25 moments/memories instead of daily happenings:

1. Salt Dough Advent Calendar

Upside down heart + OA “l” mini alpha = Christmas tree:

2. Disneyland

December Daily 2012
Posted: November 29, 2012 Filed under: December Daily, Scrapbooking 2 CommentsI finally sat down and started my 2012 December Daily album. I have had it unpacked and sitting on the craft table for a little over a week but found the idea of it entirely overwhelming. Having finally started, I am feeling a lot better about it and am excited to watch it all unfold…

Trying to keep it simple, as simple will get done:
I haven’t quite decided how I want to format the actual pages but am liking the title page. I plan to staple the first two pages together once I get the backside completed. However, the little christmas tree clip is fun and may just stay…

Have you completed a December Daily? I am really really hoping THIS is the year I follow through to the end. And not the year, I add to my Ziplocked collection of previous December Daily attempts…
Project Life: Week 40
Posted: November 27, 2012 Filed under: Project Life 6 CommentsKeeping it short and sweet this week as we are still recovering from a very last minute but extraordinarily magical trip to this place:

Week 40:

LOOOOOOVING the Design F pages:
I was actually short on 4 x 6 photos this week, so I included a funny story that I was going to journal instead:

Salt Dough Ornament Advent Calendar
Posted: November 21, 2012 Filed under: Arts and Crafts, Fun Activity, Holidays 10 CommentsI have a feeling this will be a Thanksgiving Break activity for the next few years…we all love it and the final product makes me smile. I am glad we’re a little early this year as it just means a few extra days to look at the boys’ hard work. The boys were able to do the majority of the work. After helping to mix the dough, I divided it into two halves and let the boys roll it out:

And then handed over the cookie cutters:

I love how they are completely covered in flour…heh. On Ty’s face, shirt, arms…everywhere:

We worked in batches and the entire process took us about three days. I ended up making three batches of ornaments: two were perfect, one, I forgot to punch the holes in the top. Grrr. This is the third different salt dough recipe I’ve tried. I wasn’t happy with last year’s and gave this new one a try. I think it’s a keeper. Simple: 1 cup salt, 2 cups flour, 1+ cups water until thoroughly mixed. Bake at 250 degrees for 3 hours…

After letting the ornaments cool over night, I set the boys up for painting. Christmas music on in the background for inspiration, paints ready to go, and the boys went to town:

Batch one: success. I painted a quick, light layer of Mod Podge on each ornament after the boys went to bed:

As soon as they woke up, they begged to make the ornaments “beautiful”. I handed over the bling, sipped my coffee, and watched them beautify the ornaments:

Makes me swoon…

As I stringed the ornaments, I had the boys make super simple bead ornaments to add to the mix. All you need are a few pipe cleaners and beads. I put a star on the end and bent the pipe cleaner about 3/4 of an inch up to give me room to work with and finish the ornament:

Good for fine motor skills practice and takes a loooooooong time. One bead at a time…

Their finished ornaments:

And our family advent calendar. Each day, the boys will hang one ornament on our tree…

Loving the addition of Star Wars ornaments this year:

I had a little ornament-making fun as well:

Kid made holiday goodness…bring on the December crazy!!
Subscription Box: Amazepack
Posted: November 20, 2012 Filed under: Arts and Crafts, Subscription Boxes Leave a commentAs soon as I saw the Amazepack subscription box, I knew it was a match made in crafty subscription box heaven. And I was not disappointed…I squealed when I saw this lovely on my doorstep.

And opened it right up…

I love that this crafty endeavor took me out of my paper-loving comfort zone and forced me to try my hand at painting…

I also painted a little glass sugar bowl for a jewelry holder gifty type thing…and yes, I know my painting leaves a lot to be desired. I don’t have a steady hand. Or the patience needed for fine details…heh.

The finished soap dispensers…one is complete, one still needs “something”:

I love the way this one came out. Funny, it was the one I liked the least out of the oven, but had fun embellishing it up. And there truly isn’t anything that can’t be prettied up by a little burlap:

Mod-podged the washi tape and paper accent to seal, glued on the flower, voila:

Added a little washi, but it still needs something…

I absolutely adore Amazepack…can’t wait for next month’s crafty fun!!
Project Life 2012: Week 39
Posted: November 20, 2012 Filed under: Project Life 5 CommentsOnly one week to update so far. I am about half way through week 40…chugging along. And still LOVING Project Life.
LEFT SIDE: trying to keep it simple, as always. A piece of artwork Jake brought home this week happened to match the layout so I cut a piece off and used it. Love the little pieces of the boys as I flip through the already completed pages…

Much of this week is based of the Clementine core kit blue, orange, yellow color combination…
RIGHT SIDE: I just ordered more Design F pages. I take so many pictures on my phone that this design/layout works so well for me. I love how you can tell a story across multiple journal slots…and include lots of pictures without an additional insert. I am also hopeless when it comes to spraying the Studio Calico Mistables so I covered with washi tape and love:
Jake was NOT hearing his basketball class, not even a little. He sat on the chair, lips pouted out, and did not budge. An otherwise frustrating moment but totally project life-able!! Heh. Luckily, he couldn’t commit to his pledge not to have fun and joined in the fun…eventually.

An example of story telling across journal slots…so much fun!! Tyson got a Dino Hatch Egg from his book order and both boys were completely enthralled by it…

Thanks for visiting!!
Will be linking up with The Mom Creative…
